Races Past: September 16th, 1973

Look out history fans, it's last week-end all over again, but in 1973!Strangely enough ,F.E.A.R. ended it's 1973 season on a Sunday afternoon, one of the few times in the clubs history. A massive field of cars were on hand, with 16 cars per superstock, and stock A-main ,as well as a B and C-main events for the stock division. Drivers enjoyed a dry track, with 2nd-place points finisher Lee Dailey setting fast time for the stock division in his '61 Ford Starliner at 19.62,and as was his custom for most of the season, John Beeson led the superstock field in his Walt Day-owned '57 Oldsmobile with a very quick for the era 18.48.Beeson and Dailey actually won their respective division's second -half points races, but fell short for the overall totals, with Dailey finishing second, and Beeson fourth.

"Mr.Clean" Roger Estrin passed Terry Salsbury's Galaxie to lead the final 21 laps of the superstock main in his '62 Plymouth, followed by Beeson, Salsbury, Ray Bennett, "big" John Sullivan (in a big but very competitive '62 Chrysler), and Ken Ronne driving a '59 Thunderbird owned by the late Duane Cocking. Duane was the father of long-time speedway lap-counter Karen Vogenthaler.

In the stock A-main, Dailey worked his way to the front only to be clipped at the intersection by another fast Ford hardtop driven by Frank Merxbauer. Dailey however quickly recovered to reclaim his lead from points champion Bob Sheckler just five laps from the checkered. third went to Doug Searles, followed by Tim Russ in his '65 chevelle, Earl Biddle in a '62 Galaxie, Murphy Falkenhainer in a '63 Ford Galaxie 500 XL hard-top, and rookie Nelson Downey (father of Jimmy) and his '61 Ford Starliner.

Bill Stentz won the 25-lap B-main in his '62 Galaxie notch-back, followed by Jerry Smith in a '58 Fairlane, the late Thane Carpenter in a Ford, and a young "Wierd Harold" Babula in his '63 Galaxie notch-back. I'll close with the season points totals for 1973, then it's back to 2007! F.E.A.R. historian,Tom Claibourn.
