Profile of a Season: 1969

Look out history fans, it's last Saturday night all over again, but in 1969!  The last flag day of the sixties saw a record crowd, and a 106 car field between the foreign stocks and Figure-eights on a dry track. In qualifying ( which started at 7 p.m.) , John Beeson set a new track record for the Modified division of 19.72 driving the "little Namu" , a Walt Day prepared  1952 Olds 88 hardtop.. Beeson went on to win the dash and Main event , followed to the wire in the main by Bob Moore, who was driving the '53 ford that Wayne Crum had captured the 1968 championship with. Crum chased his old car across the line in a 283 powered '40 chev owned by Ben Estes and Don Beeson.4th spot went to the " wild Indian" Dave Dean in his Grant Clothier owned  301 cube '51 bel-air hardtop, with the Edsel V-8 shoe-horned into the '52 ford of  Duvall's  Ewart Grove bringing up 5th.

Visiting competitor  Darrell Oliver of Surry B.C. was nocked unconscious at the Intersection( I'm assuming in a stock-division event) , prompting a 1-1/2 hour delay. As of press time Monday , the 19 yr old driver was still recuperating in the hospital at Everett. Racing resumed only to be delayed again after someone's crew member broke thier hand ,and the ambulance had to leave the track again! Roger "ramjet" Estrin won the stock A main in his 383 /push button automatic "61 Dodge pheonix hardtop by a mere three inches over "Crazy " Carl Zaretzke who was driving the first really "down-sized" stock division car, a 361 4-speed '62 Plymouth Fury. Carl also claimed victories in the dash and fast heat. Ken Ronne grabbed third in the A-main driving a '58 Desoto, followed by the '58 dodge of Chuck Slavin( both running 361 big block power) . Buzz Phillips was 5th in a 383 motivated '59 dodge 2-door post. Jerry Swanson captured the B-main in a '57 chev, while Gary Brooks took the C event of a very long drawn out show.
